Police Release Details of Deadly Collision

A fiery crash on Highway 401 in Whitby on Monday evening claimed the life of a female driver and left a child in critical condition.

According to Durham Regional Police (DRPS), the incident occurred at approximately 6:30 p.m. when a suspect vehicle entered the highway going the wrong direction.

Police pursued the vehicle for several kilometers before it collided with another car near exit 410. The impact caused both vehicles to burst into flames.

The female driver of the suspect vehicle was pronounced dead at the scene. The child passenger was airlifted to SickKids Hospital in Toronto.

The eastbound lanes of Highway 401 were closed for several hours as police investigated the crash. Commuters were advised to find alternate routes.

DRPS is continuing to investigate the cause of the crash. They are asking for anyone who witnessed the incident to contact them.
